Covid-19: what is my local tip doing?

With the situation rapidly changing across the country, we have compiled a list of links to council website pages which contain up-to-date information about how their recycling centres are operating due to Covid-19

Local councils are listed below in alphabetical order. Please check for up-to-date information before planning a trip to the tip.

General Covid-19 guidelines for visiting your local recycling centre or 'tip'

Where recycling centres are open, the following general guidelines apply:

Essential visits only

Only visit your local recycling centre if you cannot safely store your waste or recycling at home, or cannot safely dispose of it by other means. You should only take waste if it cannot be stored without causing risk of injury, health or harm.

Do not visit if you are displaying Covid-19 symptoms

You should not visit your local recycling centre if you are shielding and/or self-isolating due to possible Covid-19 symptoms.

Personal waste must be bagged for at least 72 hours (three days)

If anyone in your household has had Covid-19 symptoms, then any personal waste (e.g. tissues, disposable cleaning wipes, gloves or facemasks) should be doubled bagged and should be left for 72 hours (three days) before being brought to the recycling centre.

Keep 2 metres away from staff and visitors

Staff and visitors must adhere to the 2 metre social distancing rules at all times.

Staff may not help you with your waste

Recycling centre staff will not be able to help you move your waste.

Expect delays

Due to limitations on the numbers of people allowed on site at one time, traffic management systems will be in place. Delays should be expected and if long queues form you may be asked to leave and come back at another time.

Respect staff

Please treat all staff with respect and consideration.

Wash hands and do not touch your face

On your return from the recycling centre please remember not to touch your face and to wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds on arrival at your destination.

Do not leave waste outside recycling centres

Do not leave waste outside recycling centres. Leaving waste at the gates or anywhere else is classed as fly tipping and is a criminal offence for which you could be prosecuted and fined up to £50,000. If you pay for a private rubbish removal service you must check that they have a valid waste carriers licence and retain a written record of the transaction. You can find licensed waste services on the Dsposal Directory or by checking the licence number with the Environment Agency.

Check below for specific Covid-19 measures in place at your local recycling centre

Many recycling centres are operating outside of normal conditions. For example, recycling centres may have different opening hours, restrictions on the types of waste or recycling accepted, temporary visitor management systems (e.g. odd/even number plate systems or pre-booking requirements), restrictions to vehicle types allowed on site, requirement for proof of residency and changes to access to enable traffic management.
